Lesbian Visibility Week is an annual event that celebrates and supports women who identify as lesbian, queer, and non-binary. It aims to give a voice to these communities and start frank discussions about the struggles they face, both personally and professionally. For lesbian women, being part of a marginalized group can be difficult, but this week provides a space for open dialogue and a sense of solidarity.

Inclusive - Lesbians, Nonbinary, Transgender

The week also aims to include trans and non-binary members of the community. Treating everyone equally is an essential aspect of fostering a welcoming and celebratory environment. Individuals should be treated with the same level of respect and recognition as anyone else, regardless of their background or status. This approach ensures that everyone feels valued and appreciated and that no one is left out or marginalized.

While this event is now widely recognized, it wasn't until 2020 that it gained mainstream popularity. In fact, it wasn't held for a while after it was first celebrated in Los Angeles in 1990. The reason it disappeared was that lesbians felt invisible to straight America, and the attention was mainly on gay men.

Founder Linda Riley, the publisher of DIVA Magazine, felt that only 24 hours of celebration for lesbians were "simply insufficient." As a result, she founded Lesbian Visibility Week with the support of major organizations, including GLAAD, Stonewall, Kaleidoscope Trust, UK Black Pride, LGBT Foundation, and more.

Lesbian Visibility Week 2023 - Same Week as Lesbian Visibility Day

This special week of recognition falls around Lesbian Day of Visibility, which is on April 26 each year. Lesbian Visibility Week 2023 will be held from April 24-30. This week is important because it provides a space for queer women, non-binary people, and everyone in these communities to feel seen, heard, and supported. It's also crucial for raising awareness and continuing crucial discussions about oppression and inequality. So, let's celebrate and support one another during this event and beyond.
